The usual timeline

• Early June — first mid-season markdowns appear, typically 30–50% off selected lines.
• Late June — the big department stores join in and discounts widen across full categories.
• July — clearance season peaks, with up to 70% off, but sizes and stock thin out fast.
• August — final clearance racks, plus the first autumn previews.

How to play it

If you have your eye on a specific item, the sweet spot is usually late June: the discount is meaningful and your size is probably still in stock. If you are happy to take whatever is left, hold out for July.
